Building on the hype surrounding Bitcoin 💰, countless cryptocurrency projects were launched with the promise of unreasonably optimistic financial gains or disrupting the way business is done. On the other hand, inspired by surge of interest in Bitcoin, many serious research questions were raised in the fields of economics, law and computer science, leading to breakthroughs on a number of old problems.
In this talk, we will give a gentle and largely non-technical introduction to the concepts of blockchain and cryptocurrency from the computer science point of view, with a special focus on the problems in cryptography and distributed systems that have been solved in the last decade with these systems in mind.
